When Strengths Become Weaknesses: Are You Paying Attention?
7/11/2025
We love to talk about strengths. As we should. In today’s workplace, the most effective individuals and teams aren’t just competent—they’re smart about leveraging each person’s unique contributions. Strengths-based leadership, team design, and personal development are all celebrated as keys to unlocking potential.
But here’s a twist we don’t talk about enough: what happens when your greatest strength starts getting in your way?
We all have weaknesses—we know this. A lot of energy is spent trying to improve or compensate for them. But sometimes, what we label as a “weakness” is actually the shadow side of an unchecked strength.
Take someone with a strong drive to innovate. That can be game-changing. But without grounding in structure or collaboration, that same strength can come off as dismissive of rules, hard to work with, or even reckless. Another person might be praised for attention to detail—but if taken too far, it becomes perfectionism, bottlenecking progress.
So what do we do with this?
We shift how we think about development.
Balance your strengths. Understand that any strength, when overplayed, can become a liability. Ambition without awareness can bulldoze others. Empathy without boundaries can lead to burnout.
Reflect with honesty. Ask yourself: are the challenges I’m facing really about a weakness—or about a strength taken too far?
Welcome feedback from others. Sometimes, we’re blind to how our strengths show up. The people we work with often see the early signs before we do.
Normalize recalibration. Just like we revisit goals or strategies, we should regularly assess our strengths. What worked well last year may need adjusting now.
Personal insight isn’t just about knowing what you’re good at. It’s about knowing when your “good” might be getting in the way. That kind of awareness? It’s what transforms strong contributors into truly effective leaders.
